Colleagues, What a better setting than Amritsar for our 12th AFSM Annual
Congress in December 2009. It is a great privilege for me to welcome and invite
you all to Amritsar, one of the most beautiful, historic and unique city in India.
Your participation will enrich the congress and will be a seat for exchange of
ideas, research on perspective on health and competition. The prevalence
of lifestyle disorders like diabetes, ischemic heart diseases, stroke, obesity
and hypertension are becoming more relevant in our part of the world - Asia. This
directly affects our lifestyle and impacts the sustainable development of our
countries, leaving us not only with great concerns for the future, but how to
cope with the complications, hence the role of Sports Medicine and Science in
combating these disorders and promotion of exercise and health has never been
so relevant. Our congress will offer a platform for discussions, coordination,
planning, research, capacity building, knowledge sharing and transfer for vision
2020. It will bring a plethora of leading Asian and Global experts to develop
strategies addressing our concerns. I take this opportunity to welcome
you all to this innovative meeting and the culturally rich city of Amritsar. |

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the Indian
Association of Sports Medicine, it is a great pleasure to invite you to the 12th
Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress (AFSMC) being held on 5th - 6th December,
2009 in Amritsar, India. This is the first international congress of Sports Medicine
in India. The 12th AFSMC will be organized around the theme 'Sports
Medicine in Asia : Perspectives for Health & Competition.' We would like to
emphasize the role of Sports Medicine in the promotion of health and physical
fitness, besides its importance in the management of competitive sports. Thus
the program includes topics ranging from physical activity for health promotion
and active ageing as well as topics specific to competitive sports like doping,
sports injuries and rehabilitation. To bring these to you, we bring together the
various National Sports Medicine Federations and AFSM on a common platform in
order to develop a co-ordinated approach to health and sports sciences. The congress
will bring together leading global and regional experts in the field of Sports
Medicine & Sports Sciences, address actual issues in the field of health promotion,
sports injuries, rehabilitation, exercise physiology, sports informatics and outline
practical strategies for the future. In this congress we would also like to stress
the importance of a preventive approach to sports injuries and serious global
epidemics related to physical inactivity. We have been successful
in bringing together professionals of many liased branches with our discipline
to share their knowledge. We hope the stimulating program and your
participation will mutually support all of us to find new colleagues around Asia.
